The Great Nurdle Exhibition

Saturday, 19 Sept – Saturday, 10 Oct

An exhibition of artworks created to shine a light on one of the ocean’s lesser-known but widespread pollutants: NURDLES. Artists were invited to create works that either use nurdles (plastic pellets) or tell something of the story about nurdle pollution and the impact they have on our marine environment, as well as human health.

What are Nurdles?

Nurdles are tiny (2–3 mm) lentil-shaped plastic pellets used to make almost all plastic products. It takes around 600 are needed to make just one plastic bottle. Nurdles pose a serious environmental problem however:

  • They are microplastics and do not biodegrade
  • They absorb toxic chemicals and pollutants
  • They are often mistaken for food by marine life, causing harm or death
  • They are lost at every stage of the supply chain — from production to transport
  • Once in the environment, they travel far and are extremely difficult, if not impossible, to clean up.

Nurdles are the feedstock of all our plastic goods- the more plastic we needlessly consume, the greater quantities of nurdles are produced and transported around the globe.
