Beginners Throwing Session
Beginners Throwing session
A hands-on, practice-based afternoon of pottery throwing designed especially for complete beginners. This is more than just a pottery class — we offer a whole new experience with the potter’s wheel.
Throughout the morning, you’ll learn and practice key techniques, including:
- Preparing reclaim clay
- Two wedging methods: cut and slam and ox head
- Centering and coning
- Throwing your first pot
No previous experience required
*Please note: This course focuses on skill development rather than producing finished pieces. If you’d like to have any of your work bisque-fired, additional charges will apply, and it will take several weeks before your pieces are ready for collection.
Alan White
Born in December 1949, Alan White was one of eight children. It was during his school years that he first discovered a love for pottery—a passion that would go on to shape his life.
Alan began his long career at Poole Pottery in 1966, the same year England won the World Cup—a fact he still jokes about today. Starting out as a piecework thrower, he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming supervisor of the throwing department and craft centre, and eventually manager, overseeing a large team of skilled makers.
His talent and experience led to wider recognition, including appearances on television programmes such as How and The Generation Game, the latter watched by an audience of 20 million viewers. In 1982, he also shared his knowledge through teaching at a college in Southampton.
Today, Alan continues to pot on Poole Quay. With a glint of humour, he says he’ll keep throwing until England wins the World Cup again – even though that might take a while.
Suitable for all, 18yrs +

Clair Robinson
After moving to the Isle of Wight as a child, Clair discovered a lifelong passion for working with clay. She studied Ceramics and Art at A level, then earned a diploma in Ceramic Design in Southampton in 1987. Her career included roles such as production manager at a local pottery, before qualifying to teach pottery at the Isle of Wight College. In 2002, the original studio site was redeveloped, and classes moved to Jubilee Stores where she is currently a tutor and technician. Affectionately known as the “Glazy Queen” or “Kiln Goddess,” Clair continues to inspire others through her teaching and love for ceramics.
