Handmade paper can be incorporated into many creative activities, bookbinding, printing and 3D objects. In this taster day we will use recycled materials from the Quay and plant fibre to create a selection of A4 sheets of paper which can be used for your own projects. Kae will take you through the tools and materials you will need and the basic techniques of making paper. You’ll start by making a mould and deckle, which is yours to keep, and you’ll use that to make your paper.
Some of your handmade paper sheets may not be dry by the end of the class as it’s best to leave them to dry naturally. At the end of the class, your paper sheets can be packaged so you can finish drying them at home.
Light refreshments are provided, but please bring a packed lunch or you’ll have time to visit the Quay Arts Café.

What tools and equipment do I need?
All your materials are supplied, but you may also like to bring items to include in your paper, such as flower petals, leaves, threads, lace etc. Please ensure that any plant materials are fully dried out. Don’t forget an apron, paper making can be messy!

Meet your Tutor:
Kae runs a commercial bindery and letterpress studio under the name of The Lazy Dog Press where she carries out book repairs and new binding commissions. Her skills have been developed over 25 years and she has trained in UK, America and Italy. As well as bookbinding, Kae is committed to keeping the art of letterpress printing alive and creates contemporary prints using traditional techniques on historical printing presses and this work has been exhibited at home and abroad. Kae is an enthusiastic and encouraging teacher and loves passing on her skills, she teaches letterpress and bookbinding courses on the Island.
