Mike Howley Trust: Funding Round now OPEN!

Funding Opportunity for Young Island Creatives

The 2020 Mike Howley Trust awards are now open for applications.

Mike Howley, who worked for many years as Director of Cultural Services for the Isle of Wight Council, died in May 2013, leaving part of his estate for the specific benefit of aspiring young actors, musicians, dancers and writers, between the ages of 18 and 30, living on the Isle of Wight”.

 Trustees welcome applications from people within the stated age range and art forms for investment in areas such as training, equipment, marketing & promotion, recording, rehearsal space, staging, publishing costs, or simply time to create.  If you fit the bill and have an idea you are burning to put into action, we would like to hear from you.

Due to the advent of the coronavirus and our current key state of lockdown, we will be looking at all applications buy fake xanax bars digitally and via email this year.

Please read the guidelines carefully and return your application form to Megan at by Fri 24 April 2020, together with a short video about your project – no longer than 2 minutes.. This can be an example of your work if you wish.  Please also contact Megan if you have any questions.

In the light of recent advice from Government and Public Health England about the outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19), we want to do our very best to keep all our staff and customers safe. With this said, here is the update on where we stand on our opening hours/events and other matters regarding our day to day running here at Quay Arts…


Following another team meeting this morning, we have sadly come to the decision to close our doors to the public until further notice for staff and customer safety. Staff will still be onsite and contactable by email and phone. We will be in contact with you if you hold a ticket to an upcoming event or workshop.

Quay Arts are committed to bringing you the very best in arts and creative opportunities on the Isle of Wight. We will strive to find new ways in bringing this to you and ensure we are able to support the local arts ecology. Please bear with us while we explore new avenues in making this accessible to everyone.

ALL live events originally scheduled to take place in March will no longer go ahead. However, we are currently working to reschedule as many shows as possible. Unfortunately some of the shows may well be cancelled completely. As we are a very small team, please bear with us as we work through each event on a show by show basis. Box Office will be in contact with all ticket holders as soon as possible, we ask for your patience at this time and can assure you we will be doing our very best to keep all customers where to buy ambien online with no prescription informed.

We would like to invite all customers to consider transferring their ticket for a new rescheduled date or transfer to a different show taking place later on in the year. Small venues such as ours rely heavily on the revenue from these events to enable us to continue to provide a diverse programme of live entertainment and art. If rescheduling or choosing a different event is not feasible, we are asking customers to consider donating the value of the ticket to Quay Arts – as a charity we really appreciate your support throughout the challenging times we are going through. We will of course provide a refund should you wish but we would really appreciate you considering the other options first.

We have a big programme of events scheduled for the rest of the year, therefore will be reviewing later events nearer the time.


Courses and workshops taking place at Jubilee Stores and Quay Arts have been suspended till further notice. All customers already booked onto a course or workshop will be contacted by a member of our Box Office ASAP.

Quay Arts are looking to commission engaging digital resources for children and families to access online, as part of our family outreach programme supported by the Daisie Rich Trust. 

We are seeking expressions of interest from artists, makers, creatives for new content that can be shared digitally, such as live or pre-recorded video, audio, worksheets & templates, or a blend. 

There is no specific theme, but material should be appropriate to the audience and have a participatory or learning element.  

Expressions of interest should: 

  • be engaging for children 
  • not require prior knowledge of an art form 
  • not require specialist materials to join in 

Proposed resource/s should be: 

  • minimum of X2 A4 sides (if worksheets) – – maximum of X6 A4 sides 
  • minimum of 10 minutes (if video / audio) – maximum of 30 minutes (can be chunked up) 
  • high quality  

Along with expression of interest, you may wish to supply a CV, link to examples of your work, and outline how you plan to realise the resource, along with any relevant experience of working with children and families. 

This opportunity is open to those 18 and over.  

X3 commissions will be awarded attracting a fee of £150 per commission. An additional limited materials budget will be made available. 

We are unable to provide funds to cover purchase of digital resources but may be able to assist with small equipment loan such as digital SLR camera / tripod etc upon request.

    Job Vacancy: Arts & Strategy Manager

    ARTS & STRATEGY MANAGER This is a great opportunity to be part of a friendly and enthusiastic team, working in an exciting and varied environment. Quay Arts is the Isle of Wight’s leading arts centre, situated in a converted 19th century brewery complex, next to the river Medina in Newport.

    We house various exhibition and live events spaces, as well as a popular café and craft shop. In addition, our studio complex and workshop/education facilities (Jubilee Stores) are located nearby. We are now looking to appoint a dynamic Arts and Strategy Manager who will play a lead role in planning and evaluating our artistic programme, as well as being responsible for overseeing learning and participation and pursuing future fundraising opportunities.

    The successful applicant will work closely with the Centre Manager, as well as being responsible for a small and highly skilled Arts team. They will also work collaboratively with other Island arts and heritage organisations to plan and deliver Island wide projects. We are looking for an experienced individual to deliver and develop our arts policy and strategic vision.

    Join us for our first Zoom artist talk in lockdown 2.0, with artist Susie Prangnell discussing her latest exhibition ‘Balance’ at Quay Arts, her chosen medium soft pastels, creative process and some very useful advice for anyone wishing to pursue a career in the arts and creative industries.

    COVID-19 Update: Lockdown 2

    Although we have shut our doors, rest assured we will still be working hard behind the scenes to bring the Quay to your homes during these strange times.

    We know you love visiting our craft shop for our unique Christmas gifts, so we will be running an online shop providing a click & collect / local delivery service through our website!

    We will be doing our very best to bring you great online content and offers, from online shopping to virtual gallery tours, we will have something for everyone! More details to be announced soon.

    We are currently working on a risk assessment for the re-opening of Jubilee Stores. This may involve reducing class sizes and putting measures in place for regular classes to run smoothly and safely for all participants and tutors.     Culture Recovery Fund: It’s good news!

    Quay Arts and Ventnor Exchange receive lifeline grant from Government’s £1.57bn Culture Recovery Fund

    Quay Arts and Ventnor Exchange have been awarded a combined grant of £231,927 as part of the Government’s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund (CRF) to help face the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and to ensure they have a sustainable future, the Culture Secretary announced Monday 12th October.

    Quay Arts and Ventnor Exchange are two of 1,385 cultural and creative organisations across the country receiving urgently needed support. The £257 million of investment has been announced today as part of the very first round of the Culture Recovery Fund grants programme being administered by Arts Council England. Further rounds of funding in the cultural and heritage sector are due to be announced over the coming weeks.

    Since 1976 Quay Arts has been the Island’s leading multidisciplinary art centre, enabling the creative imagination and ambition for artists, musicians and performers. Providing opportunities for children, young people and emerging talent. Forging connections with credited museums and galleries, bringing collections of historical and cultural significance to the Quay as well as commissioning art in public spaces through its recent ‘Lift the Lid on Island Culture’ public art commissioning project.

    Open since 2014, Ventnor Exchange has grown to play a key role in developing emerging talent, operating a venue and cultural hub for the past six years, as well as the multi award winning Ventnor Fringe Festival and innovative youth programme ‘Brave Island’.

    This grant will see both organisations work more closely together to develop the Island’s cultural ecosystem and build greater resilience in these uncertain times. This funding will allow us time to take stock of the new world in which we find ourselves and continue to provide arts programmes and activities with which people of all backgrounds can engage.  It includes a direct investment of £30,000 to Ventnor Exchange to help protect jobs and allow the reintroduction of a full live programme, adapted to the new guidelines, which would otherwise be unviable. 

    Quay Arts, Visual Arts Manager, Georgia Newman said: “We are absolutely thrilled to see our joint bid with Ventnor Exchange has been accepted! These are truly unprecedented times, the impact of the pandemic having severely hit our trading activities, which supports the Quay Arts charity, Steve Ross Foundation for the Arts. This investment will ensure there is a safe place for arts and culture to not only survive, but to thrive on the Isle of Wight.”

    Ventnor Exchange, Co-Director, Jack Whitewood said: “This vital funding is transformative for Ventnor Exchange. After losing 75% of our income following months of closure and the cancellation of Ventnor Fringe, this now gives us hope. After months of firefighting, we can now focus all of our efforts and resources on supporting our community and helping to lead the cultural, social and economic recovery to come.”

    Arts Council England is the national development agency for creativity and culture. We have set out our strategic vision in Let’s Create that by 2030 we want England to be a country in which the creativity of each of us is valued and given the chance to flourish and where everyone of us has access to a remarkable range of high quality cultural experiences. We invest public money from Government and The National Lottery to help support the sector and to deliver this vision.

    Following the Covid-19 crisis, the Arts Council developed a £160 million Emergency Response Package, with nearly 90% coming from the National Lottery, for organisations and individuals needing support. We are also one of several bodies administering the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund and unprecedented support package of £1.57 for the culture and heritage sector. Find out more at

    Quay Arts will be re-opening on Saturday 4th July. And we want to reassure all our customers that we are working hard to put all the measures in place so you can have a safe visit here at the Quay.

    In line with the latest Government guidance, we are excited to confirm that Quay Arts will be reopening on Saturday 4th July – we can’t wait to welcome you back!

    Your safety and our staff’s safety continues to be our top priority and this is the first step of a phased reopening. And we want to reassure all our customers that we are working hard to put all the measures in place so you can have a safe visit here at the Quay.


    • A new queuing system to protect customers and staff
    • Socially distanced table plan in the café
    • Hand sanitisers available around the building
    • One person at a time in the toilets
    • Limited menu available and additional take away options
    • Staff wearing PPE for table service
    • Protective perspex on the bar
    • Reduced opening hours to 10am – 4pm
    • Tables and chairs will be wiped down and sanitised after every customer use

    Please DO NOT come into Quay Arts if you are showing any COVID-19 symptoms – coughing, sneezing, sore throat high temperature or loss of taste and smell. DO NOT come into Quay Arts if you have been in contact with someone with COVID-19.


    The galleries will be re-opened as of Saturday 4th July, with a one way system in place for guidance in regards to social distancing. Due to the current situation, the exhibition key which buy ambien next day delivery will be on display in the West Gallery will be the ‘Great Leap Forward’ Exhibition, which was running before lock down. We also have a NEW exhibition in the Clayden Gallery, ‘Battle of the Bands’, musical icons rendered in cardboard from the Hullabaloo At Home Festival 2020!


    The craft shop will remain closed but we hope to re-open very soon. The box office has been re-located to the cafe office for the time being.

    Hands & Faces: ONLINE drawing course

    Hands and faces with Nick Martin – a short online drawing course

    Fridays 24 Jul / 31 Jul / 7 Aug / 10 – 11am / £30


    Join experienced tutor Nick Martin for an online course that will help you establish good drawing practice and easy ways of always getting the face and hands ‘right’.

    With some simple rules and a little practice, you will never need to fear hands and feet again!

    The course is delivered across online via Zoom across three hour long sessions on consecutive Fridays.

    Session 1 – group introductions / tutor demo / Q&As

    Session 2 – practical activity focussing on the face & features

    Session 3 – practical activity exploring hands

    An individual 10 min tutorial will be offered to each student between session 2 and 3 for feedback and to set some homework.The course will be delivered via Zoom with a maximum of 10 places available, which must be pre-booked.

    This course has been developed with consideration for participants working from home and only a few pencils and some A3 paper is required to join in.

    The tutor will host the Zoom sessions and allow participants in at the allotted start time of 10am.

    Zoom can be downloaded as an app to a PC / laptop or accessed via a web browser.



    HOMEART #8 – A La Mondrian!

    Piet Mondrian (b. 1872 – d. 1944) was a major player in the Dutch abstract art movement known as the De Stijl (The Style) and regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 20th Century.

    He developed a style of totally abstract painting which combined only straight lines and right angles, primary colours and primary values (black, white and grey).

    Mondrian’s work continues to inspire architects and fashion designers, such as the contemporary designer Camille Walala

    Create your own MONDRIAN inspired artworks.

    You’ll need: thin card (or a cereal box), ruler, scissors, masking tape and pencil.

    1.Draw several horizontal and vertical lines on your card (non-glossy side of cereal pack) using the ruler. Make sure the lines are spaced at differently spaced intervals.

    2.Where horizontal and vertical lines have crossed you will have created squares and rectangles. Cut out a number of these shapes (but don’t cut out shapes that join the edge of your template).

    3.Cut a straight line from the edge of your template to reach into a shape, then use masking tape or similar to repair the single cut line. If you are old enough and competent you can use a craft knife with a metal cutting ruler and self-healing mat underneath. 

    4.Place your template over a sheet of white paper and start colouring with red, yellow, blue, black and grey – this recreates the three primary colour and values Mondrian worked with.

    5.Make more than one template for variety of shapes and be sure to include some long thin slots, which can be used to box in coloured areas.

    6.Rotating templates to apply shapes in different directions for variety.

    It’s harder than it looks, to find a harmonious combination of lines, shapes and colour!

    Mondrian’s late work such as ‘Victory Boogie Woogie’ (1942) incorporated torn coloured paper. For an extended activity how about cutting out and wrapping coloured bands of paper over paper strips to glue onto a white background.
