Success Through Failure

Sat 2 August Sat 2 August

Success through Failure
Join Sculptor Steve Baxter as he discusses creative experimentation and the necessity of failure in art and life. Start with nothing, end with something better. A journey into creating new artworks by overcoming the inertia of getting something wrong.

This is a 3-hour event comprising a lecture and practical workshop – evidencing the nature of failure in art, then encouraging participants to jump in and generate ideas and concepts through paper sculpture from contemporary themes.

Steve Baxter was the winner of the Quay Arts OPEN 2023, followed by his solo exhibition Living | Room in 2024/25.

Meet your Tutor:
Steve is known for his inventive and opportunistic use of materials and his ability to transform everyday objects and materials into striking, thought-provoking pieces. His practice challenges traditional boundaries between function and art, inviting us to see the familiar in entirely new ways.

He studied sculpture at Wimbledon and St Martins Schools of Art, both of which were instrumental in developing his approach to pushing the boundaries of traditional sculptural techniques and thoughtful conceptual processes.  That foundation continues to inform his practice, which is rooted in experimentation, material play, and a deep curiosity about form and function.

Steve’s sculptures have been exhibited widely across the UK, featured in public art projects, private collections and gallery shows. Most recently, his work was the focus of a solo exhibition ‘Living | Room’ at Quay Arts last winter.

DONATE TO QUAY ARTS

Even a little money can make a big difference at Quay Arts

Did you realise that when you buy a cup of freshly ground barista coffee in our Café Bar, you are helping to support the cultural life of the Isle of Wight?

However, the generosity of our supporters goes beyond sales of food, drink and theatre tickets. Gifts of money, time, and even specific items make a huge difference to the amount of work we can do. Together, we can continue to enrich the lives of islanders and visitors with our fantastic programme of events.
