Award-Winning island theatre company Deadman, returns to the Quay Arts with a new full-production of The Freshwater Five before setting sail on a tour of UK coastal communities.

‘The Freshwater Five’ is the story of the biggest most audacious drug busts in British history.

The new full-production tells the tale of five fishermen on the Isle of Wight (Jamie Green, Jon Beere, Zoran Dresic, Daniel Payne & Scott Birtwistle) who were sentenced to a total of 104 years for conspiracy to import £53m worth of cocaine. They have always professed their innocence.

Beginning on the eve of the 2021 appeal, Isle of Wight-born playwright Liam Patrick Harrison’s stageplay is a detailed and rich theatrical investigation into the men’s tragic downfall. The developed production boasts a wealth of new local creative talent and delves further and deeper into themes of contemporary/historic smuggling, maritime mythology, the Bristish justice system and the ongoing deterioration of our coastal communities.

Built on the wave of enormously positive coverage and audience feedback received, Arts Council England has funded Deadman to develop ‘The Freshwater Five’ for a tour the UK South Coast – beginning its journey with a return to the company’s home venue of Quay Arts Centre for a five nights run from 27 February – 3 March 2023.
