‘Edinburgh and the One O’Clock Gun’ / by Nick Martin
Quay Arts is delighted to preview a new large format collage by Island based artist Nick Martin before the work travels to Scotland for exhibition. Created over 10 months ‘Edinburgh and the One o’clock Gun’ is Nick’s second lockdown project, the first being a painted collage of Ryde, Isle of Wight, which was completed in 2020 and also shown at Quay Arts.
‘Edinburgh and the One O’clock Gun’ measures 2.5 meters by 1.5 meters and free to view in Quay Arts Café Bar.
Artist statement by Nick Martin
‘I thought it was time I did an image of Edinburgh, my home town, as I have made so many collages of other towns. I use hand painted paper, with gouache paint, then nail scissors to cut out.’
‘I know the topography of Edinburgh very well, and together with Google Earth I was able to reconstruct my ‘inner map’ of Edinburgh. It required a lot of research and patience, so Lockdown was a perfect vehicle for this purpose. All the people are Edinburgh folk or tourists I saw there.’
The Collage will be travelling to Edinburgh later this year for Exhibiting.
Nick says, ‘I wanted the Isle of Wight to see it first before it found its home Up North!’
