Breakout! Exhibition

The team at Quay Arts is thrilled to announce a NEW exhibition which is open to all to join in… a revival of the ‘My Millenium’ exhibition from twenty years ago.

Twenty years ago, Quay Arts organised an ambitious project to fill the building with self-portraits of a generation of children. As with many things we’ve done over the years, it started small (with a 10 x 10cm template) but as schools got on board and drawings, paintings and prints came flooding in, it grew to such an extent that the resulting exhibition, My Millenium, ended up in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest collection of self-portraits ever – 13,626!  Find out more about the exhibition here.

In 2020 we are inviting every Islander, of any age, to submit a self-portrait, in any medium, the only restriction being that it must be 10cm x 10cm, as the original portraits were. We want to make the Breakout! Exhibition bigger and better than before, so we need YOU!

We are also asking you to tell us ‘What’s at the end of your rainbow?’ – send us a few words to say what Breakout! means to you.

As a self-financed charity, Quay Arts relies on income from our trading activities to bring the arts to Islanders and we have set ourselves a target of £20,000 so that we can still be here for you when our own Breakout happens.

We are asking for a donation of £1 from every person or household that takes part. If you can’t donate, we’d like you to enter anyway, just for the fun of it! Buttons to submit donations through Paypal or our secure website are at the bottom of this page.

We don’t know when we will be able to put up the exhibition but we are really looking forward to welcoming you to Quay Arts for this celebration of the spirit of our Island community.

To kickstart Breakout!, Quay Arts staff in furlough and working in isolation have submitted their own self-portraits – see if you can recognise us!

We want to collect as many self-portraits as possible. All we need you to do is fill in the entry form, upload your portrait and send it in! We will be displaying a selection on an online gallery each week, up until when we are able to display the exhibition in our West Gallery.

Please hold on to your portrait until we release further details about collecting the physical portraits.

How to submit your portraits…

  1. Make your self-portraits! In any medium you like, be creative, just make sure that it is 10cm x 10cm.
  2. Fill out the form below, and attach up to two images of your self-portrait (maximum individual file size 5mb). You will need to hold onto your portrait for when we re-open and can display them in the West Gallery. (Details to be confirmed). If you have trouble uploading your image please get in touch –
  3. Tick the box to confirm that you agree to Quay Arts using your image online and as part of any marketing activities we carry out to promote the exhibition.

We are now collecting your self-portraits and you can now drop off your portraits through the Quay Arts letterbox! Or you can post it to:

Quay Arts, 15 Sea Street, Newport Harbour, Isle of Wight PO30 5BD

If you haven’t already submitted your portrait online, you can post/drop-off your self-portrait straight to Quay Arts. All we ask is that you include your answer to our question, ‘what’s at the end of your rainbow?’ on the back of your portrait.

Now that we are re-opening on Saturday (4th July), we have set up a new station where you can drop off your Breakout! self-portraits! As of Saturday 4th July, you will be able to come into Quay Arts cafe to drop off your portraits. If you have already submitted your portrait online, we would now love to collect the physical copies. So you can either post to Quay Arts or come into the Quay Arts Cafe and post them to our drop-off point. Haven’t done your portrait yet? No worries! You can post them whenever you like, the only requirement we ask is if you haven’t filled out a submit form online, to write your answer to our question, ‘whats at the end of your rainbow?’ on the back of your portrait.
