Opening Doors to the Island Community

Thursday 13 Nov, 2014

Quay Arts is delighted to announce a fresh new approach to the way in which it works with Island creatives by opening its doors and inviting them to take ownership of the programming and more broadly, contribute to how the listed building on Sea Street can better serve the island community.

Leading this new approach is Charlotte Denman-Johnson (General Manager) taking overall responsibility for Quay Arts with the Artistic Director, Robert Miles having left to take up a new role back in theatre management on the mainland.

This change in direction has been bought about by the withdrawal (two years ago) of an annual grant from the Arts Council, since then the charity has been surviving, delivering the same vibrant programming by utilising its reserves to match funding from the Isle of Wight Council, project based funding and a contribution from the trading arm. However reserves are now exhausted and so the new vision is designed to enable Quay Arts to not only become a sustainable organisation without guaranteed funding, but to offer greater community engagement.

Quay Arts is coming to the end of the internal changes that were needed to realise this vision and with new fundraising initiatives raising awareness of the importance of supporting the charity and greater volunteer engagement, the future of the charity is bright.

Charlotte Denman-Johnson comments ‘Quay Arts is looking to hear from people with a passion for the arts to give their time to volunteer and assist with fundraising, as well as inviting the Island creative community to contribute towards the spring 2015 season. We are really excited about working in this collaborative way and truly believe that we can become a valued creative community hub’.
