The current winner of the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2018, Handsworth-born Xhosa Cole is an embodiment of the success of numerous community arts programmes, including the Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra, Birmingham Schools Symphony Orchestra and Jazzlines Ensemble. Having first played the tenor at Ladywood Community Music School, he’s among a long legacy of Birmingham saxophonists. While studying in sixth form, Xhosa attended courses with the National Youth Jazz Collective and National Youth Wind Orchestra. Xhosa now regularly performs, writes and teaches around Birmingham. He is also now beginning to branch out around the UK with performances at the London Saxophone Festival 2019, and we are delighted to welcome him to the Isle of Wight where he will perform a mixture of standards and his own compositions, backed by Jim Thorn (piano), Jon Thorne (double bass) and Ken Black (drums) with some additional surprise guests.
In addition there will be a free workshop in the theatre on Friday 19th April with Xhosa Cole from 2:30 – 4:30pm – limited places available. Book via Jim Thorn on firstname.lastname@example.org.
