An outstanding collection of drawings, prints and paintings from Southampton City Art Gallery comes to Quay Arts for The Drawing Process this autumn.
The collection, donated by the late Philip Schlee (1924-2011) comprises over 40 works by artists working in Britain between 1920 and 2004, including Frank Auerbach, David Hockney, Elisabeth Frink, Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland, Basil Beattie and Gillian Ayres.
The collection was conceived with a very practical question, ‘what role does drawing play in the work of artists?’ and intended as a resource for practitioners, students and artists, to help develop their thinking about, and uses of drawing.
To examine the role of drawing within a contemporary visual arts practice, artists living on the Isle of Wight have been invited to display recent works amongst the collection, complementing the different drawing methodologies and styles. Artists include: Marius von Brasch, Barbara Gowan, Howard Hardiman, Joanne Hummel-Newell, Chris Jenkins, Joanna Kori, Lisa Traxler and Ian Whitmore, as well as a collaborative piece made in response to Martin Creed’s felt tip pen drawing ‘Work No. 944’ by visitors at the IW Festival in 2014, and a video work by artist Simon Wells from his ‘Sandoodle’ project earlier this year, where visitors were invited to doodle into a layer of sand on the gallery floor.
The Drawing Process coincides with the world’s largest drawing festival in October; The Big Draw. This year’s Big Draw theme ‘Every Drawing Tells a Story’ will be used to explore the artworks in the gallery through a series of creative workshops, creating alternative narratives using the artworks as a catalyst. They include charcoal, bookmaking and assemblage, as well as creative writing, music and physical performance, culminating into a collaborative Live Event in the gallery to celebrate the art of drawing on Saturday 28th November.
