Fundraiser talk by Brian Greening
Local historian, Brian Greening, presents a nostalgic storytelling of the life of Island character, Bill Shepard. The talk and slide show will cover key moments in Bill’s amazing life and history: from his ancestors on Newport Quay in 1370; his schooldays; his job working on the Quay; his five years in the RAF and the horrors he experienced; his return to the Island and his country pursuits - rabbiting, bird watching, flowers and fauna; his local history studies; his job as a rat catcher; and twenty three years at the Crematorium!
A love of history and research saw Bill Shepard publish his first book – Newport Isle of Wight Remembered – back in 1978. Since then he has written collaboratively and published many other works, sharing his encyclopaedic knowledge of local history. Along the way, Bill has won awards for his writing and gained a reputation as one of the Island’s true characters.
