Education
Gallery Education at Quay Arts
Quay Arts is an educational resource that provides a unique opportunity for groups to learn in a stimulating gallery environment. We welcome visits from schools, colleges, community groups and other organisations and can provide both tours and artist-led workshops related to our current exhibitions.

Self-directed visit
Self-directed visits to our galleries are always welcome, but it would be advisable to notify us in advance of your intended visit to ensure that we are not running schools’ workshops in the gallery at the same time. Our website www.quayarts.org has information on current and forthcoming exhibitions up to four months ahead. If you would like information about exhibitions further ahead, please contact our Exhibitions Organiser, Georgia Newman on 01983 824160.
Artist-led workshops:
Schools and community workshops
Art workshops exploring any of the exhibition themes in our galleries can be delivered by our team of Artist Educators. Sessions can take place either at Quay Arts, at Jubilee Stores or in school and a typical two-hour workshop costs around £100 depending on group size and material costs. A whole day would cost around £200 plus materials.
Young Quay
Combining Quay Arts' sucessful Studio Quay and Young Curators initiatives, we are offering Young Quay FREE to sixth formers interested in pursuing further or higher education leading to a career in the Arts. We will be exploring practical, studio-based sessions with an introduction to the curatorial process, leading to our next Young Island Open in 2014! Membership of Young Quay is by application and interview. Email your interest to j.cusack@quayarts.org
Life Drawing for Students
From 14 January - 11 February, we are offering sixth formers a fantastic opportunity to build portfolios for college applications, explore different approaches to drawing from the life model and evelop new techniques. This five week course is led by artist, Nick Martin and is heavily subsidised, costing just £35 including basic materials.
Learning Curve Gallery Exhibitions
Schools can apply to work with an artist, either at Quay Arts or in school, to produce a co-creation exhibition ‘in response’ to work displayed in one of our main galleries. To produce a Learning Curve Gallery show with an artist typically involves 5 – 7 days work and costs £750 - £1000. This would typically exhibit in the Learning Curve Gallery for six to nine weeks.
Arts award
Quay Arts is a registered Arts Award Centre to Bronze and Silver level. All our Gallery educators are qualified Arts Award Advisors. If you are interested in Arts Award, contact j.cusack@quayarts.org
Jubilee Stores
Jubilee Stores, in Newport Harbour, houses Quay Arts’ workshop spaces: Pottery, Jewellery Studio, General Workshop with Printmaking facilities, as well as six private artists’ studios.
The majority of our Classes and Workshops programme is delivered there, and the General Workshop is also available for hire (schools’ rate £10 per hour). Artist Tutors can deliver tailor-made workshops to suit your requirements (artist’s fee £25 per hour).
